Peter TYRER Peter Tyrer, M.D., B.Chir., F.R.C.P., D.P.M., F.R.C.Psych., FMedSci Professor of Community Psychiatry Imperial College London, UK Email: p.tyrer@imperial.ac.uk Peter Tyrer obtained his medical qualifications at the University of Cambridge at St Thomas’s Hospital, London and subsequently trained in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry, London. Dr. Tyrer was the former head of the Centre for Mental Health and the Department of Psychological Medicine at Imperial College. Dr. Tyrer is also a professor of community psychiatry and honorary consultant in rehabilitation psychiatry at Central North West London Mental Health NHS Trust and an honorary consultant psychiatrist to the West London Mental Health Trust. Dr. Tyrer has carried out research into the treatment and classification of common mental and personality disorders since he was a medical student and has published 38 books and over 400 original articles on these subjects. He is the founder and president of the British and Irish Group for the Study of Personality Disorders, and also the Chair of the Section on Personality Disorders of the World Psychiatric Association and of the ICD-11 Work Group for the Revision of the Classification of Personality Disorders. Additionally, Dr. Tyrer is the Editor of the British Journal of Psychiatry and is on the Editorial Board of nine other journals. Despite his academic interests he still regards himself primarily as a ‘coal-face’ psychiatrist who has learnt the most from his patients – often from those in the ‘last chance saloon’ and among the most stimulating and challenging of these have been those with multiple pathology and personality disorder.
