Mario MAJ Mario Maj, M.D., PhD Professor and Chairman, Department of Psychiatry University of Naples Naples, Italy President, World Psychiatric Association Dr. Maj, M.D., PhD studied medicine in Naples, Italy. He continued his education, attaining a PhD in Behavioral Sciences while in Sweden. Dr. Maj is currently the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Naples, in addition to having the distinction of being the President of the World Psychiatric Association. Dr. Maj also founded the journal ‘World Psychiatry’, and currently edits this important journal, which has now an impact factor of 5.562. According to the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), Dr. Maj was the Italian psychiatrist with the highest number of citations in the period 1981-2009. Dr. Maj has held many important positions during his career. He is or has been president of the following organizations: The European Psychiatric Association (2003-2004), the Italian Psychiatric Association (2000-2002), the Italian Society of Biological Psychiatry (1991-present), and the Italian Society of Psychopathology (2007-present). He is also an advisor for mental health to the Minister of Health in Italy. In addition to these positions, Dr. Maj has been extremely active as a researcher and an educator over the course of his career. He worked on behalf of the World Health Organization in sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia and Latin America (1983-1991) and was Chairman of the Section on Neuropsychiatry for the Global Programme on AIDS, (1989-1991). Dr. Maj is currently the Chairperson of the Work Group for Mood and Anxiety Disorders of the ICD-11 and a member of the Work Group for Mood Disorders of the DSM-V.
